One of my great feats as a collector of vintage clothing, but more so a wearer of vintage clothing, I think, has been working jodhpurs into my regular routine.  I think– nay, know – that there are very few women out there so willing to wear pants that make their hips look about twice the size that they really are.  Why am I so willing?  I’m not really sure, but when I see Katharine Hepburn or Gene Tierney on screen fresh from a horseback ride in their jodhpurs, suddenly I’m very convinced.  Most men seem to be, too, at the sight of the classy lady with the classy style.

The jodhpur hits at the high waist, flairs through the hip, and comes back into a very slim leg that hits at the ankle, usually fashioned with patches on the inside of each knee.  Mine are a heavy cotton khaki– perfect for the office with a blouse and flats, fun with a tee shirt and keds anywhere else.  The most fun, unique, way to make your khakis work, if you ask me.

As ever, work it, ladies.

vintage prom dress

We’ve been working like crazy to get our gorgeous vintage prom dresses ready for the store this month!  We’ll have over 100 that will be listed during March–so be sure to take a peek.  The awesome 80s seem to be dominating this season, but we also have a few 50s, 60s, & 70s dresses, too.   *On a side note– this was my last session with one of my favorite models, Emily.  She’s actually 4 1/2 months pregnant in these photos.

emilio pucci photoEmilio Pucci (1914-1992) was born into a luxurious and leisurely life of Italian nobility – and we are enriched for it. He did everything from inventing capri pants to inadvertently designing Barbie clothes. His career in fashion design started modestly with ski team uniforms and soon blossomed into a trademark: kaleidoscopes of  geometric designs on luxurious, wrinkle-free silks and plush velvets. The end result was clothing that had more complimentary angles than geometry itself. Marilyn Monroe was even laid to rest in one of his dresses; talk about going out in style.

Fast forward forty decades and Pucci’s rayon relics are some of the most sought after vintage pieces around. Here is an excellent sample of a Pucci dress that’s currently available on eBay. Vibrant colors and patterns, classic Pucci.

I would skip over the licensed Formfit Rodgers lingerie; I think the prices are artificially inflated for a few scraps of rayon polyester. Save your pennies for the bigger better deal and you (and everyone around you) will be glad you did. If you MUST tempt yourself here’s a fine example, but I don’t condone it!

Beware, Pucci-esque pieces are fairly common because of his huge influence on the industry. Not to say that we can’t love the clothes he obviously inspired, but if want Emilio, his designs are easily identifiable. Look for his tag and signature (sometimes initials) discretely appearing somewhere amongst the pattern.

Most vintage Pucci fetches prices that are not feasible to the financially square fashionista, in geometric terms, they’re way beyond obtuse. If you like what you see, get ready for heartbreak or get ready to max out your credit card. If you’re on a budget you can try to keep things acute (less than $90) and add some Pucci pizazz to any outfit by picking up one of his vintage scarves or other accessories.

Of course, if you are an heiress or just have more money than brains, you can always buy this lot. And if you do, can you spare a suitcase for helping you find it?
